College Students: Four Tips for Better Health

College can be an exciting time as you gear up to take on a whole new adventure. While about 40% of college students who attend a public college choose to live on campus, they no longer have the influence of their parents when it comes to maintaining a healthy life. With plenty of pizza and movie nights on the horizon and late-night cramming for exams, it is important to find a healthy balance so you don't find yourself running to the medical clinic every week. If you want to stay healthy during your time at college, here are some tips to help you maintain some balance and health. 

Make the Most of Your Dining Options

One of the best things about college is the dining options available. Many schools offer dining plans that allow you to eat in their dining facility a certain amount of times. These dining facilities offer a plethora of fruits, vegetables, meats, and more. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is important to load up on some of each food group so you have enough energy to get through hours of studying. Take advantage of your school's meal plan and skip the fast food restaurants. 

Take Control of Your Stress

It is very easy to get stressed out when you have loads of homework and exams. Stress can lead to depression, which can ultimately lead to suicide in severe cases. With suicide being the 2nd ranking cause of death for individuals 15–24 years of age, it is important that college students find a way to manage their stress. If you feel depressed, it is imperative that you visit your school's counseling center to talk to someone who can help provide you tips on managing your stress and depression. 

Get Enough Rest

Not getting enough sleep can be detrimental to both your health and your studies. Not only can it cloud your thinking when you are trying to take an exam, but it can lead to obesity, depression, and more health-related problems. Experts suggest that college students get well over 8 hours of sleep each night in order to avoid a sleep debt. Staying on a routine can help you manage your sleep schedule so that you can bank enough hours of sleep each night. 

Avoid the Booze

Underage drinking is associated with many health and social issues. Binge drinking is a common activity that takes place in various schools across the country. With about 1.5 billion episodes of binge drinking among people who are 18 and older, it is important to avoid situations where binge drinking will go on. Doing so will help you find more time for healthier activities that won't leave you feeling sick—or worse.
